Sage had changed into the pajamas they’d bought and leaned back in the large recliner in the living room with Jak’s laptop resting on her crossed legs. A large set of headphones covered her ears. He had been right. They sounded better and were more comfortable than the tiny buds. Before he’d stretched out on the couch early for a nap, he’d put a movie in and turned subtitles on.

“I’m really freaking tired. I’ll sleep for a couple of hours and then make us dinner.” he’d said as he covered up with a patchwork quilt. “Maybe you’ll pick up how to read a little with those on.”

Now she sat there alone, tilting her head curiously as she watched him sleep. He’d drifted off almost instantly and she’d grown concerned. The new shifting must have taken a toll on him.

Turning her attention back to the computer screen, she watched the last few minutes of the movie. She wasn’t sure if she’d learned any words or not and many times her attention span had been lacking. Because of this, she lost track of the story. Still, she enjoyed the visuals and looking at the handsome God of Thunder.

When the unfamiliar words began scrolling across the screen at the end of the movie, she closed the laptop carefully and sat it on the table beside her. Jak had been asleep for a while, but he appeared to be resting peacefully. Sage didn’t have the heart to wake him up.

She opened the cardboard box containing what remained of her fast food. To her, fast food meant an animal you had to chase down, like a deer. She popped one of the chicken nuggets into her mouth. It didn’t exactly hit the spot and she wondered if there was any more meat like they’d had last night. Climbing out of the recliner with a little hop, she tiptoed across the room and slipped silently into the kitchen.

The freezer was full of wrapped cuts of meat, but all of them were frozen rock solid. Frowning, she checked the lower half of the fridge. Nothing jumped out of her. She would have loved if a juicy pig had been captive behind the door. After picking up a pack of bologna and sniffing the contents, she decided on a glass of milk. She remembered which cabinet Jak had taken the cups out of yesterday and she poured a large glass full. Sage grinned as she licked off her milk mustache.

I’ve got this human thing down. I didn’t even drink out of the jug.

Heading back into the living room, she checked on Jak. He hadn’t move so much as an inch that she could tell and now she was growing tired, too. Pretending she hadn’t been anxious the whole day had been hard. The world outside the forest was too busy, loud, and there were a million smells she didn’t recognize. It made her head hurt.

She lifted the quilt enough so that she could slip beneath the covers and lie on top of Jak.
